Web Hosting Philosophy
|
While it may be tempting to host a web site in-house, consider the alternatives. It is true that web hosting software is available for free and can be run on a simple low-end PC. The web server could be connected to the internet with a modem. The machine does not even need to be dedicated to that one task, and could also serve as a normal workstation. However, the results of such a solution will be far less than acceptable. A non-dedicated machine will likely crash often and need to be rebooted, which means the server will not always be available. A dedicated web server connected to the internet with at least a full T1 line is necessary. The server software will need to be "tuned" to respond to load, potential intrusion and other factors. A computer technician should really be on hand at all times. When you consider the costs of doing a professional job, it really does not make sense to host a web site in-house.
Use this chart to make your own comparison of the alternatives.
